How to download google maps to use offline

Did you know you can download maps from google maps to your phone, and then use them as normal when you are offline?
This is a big data saver (if you download using free wifi) and great if you are in an area without coverage – you can just carry on as usual.
Important things to know
- You can download maps with an android phone or an iphone.
- The area you select can be quite large – a whole city or more.
- You can easily delete the maps when you don’t need them any more.
- You can search for locations or routes using the downloaded map offline.
- If you are using maps for step-by-step driving directions, use as normal. The only thing missing is the live traffic conditions.
- Google doesn’t support offline navigation for walking, biking or public transport…..yet!
How do I download a map?
The steps are:
1. Open Google Maps on your phone
2. Tap your profile picture (in the top right corner)
3. Tap “Offline Maps” in the list that appears
4. Tap “Select Your Own Map”
5. Use your finger to move the rectangle over the area you want to download. (Note that below the map a message will tell you how much free space this will use up on your phone.
6. Click the “Download” button below the map
You can use the map as normal, update the map, and delete a map when you no longer need it.
When you need to use the map….
1. Open Google Maps on your phone
2. Tap your profile picture (in the top right corner)
3. Tap “Offline Maps” in the list that appears
4. Select the map you want to view
