Get to know a bit about me on this page

Hi, and thanks for stopping by on this website and on this page to find out a bit more about me and why I’m here!
I’m a long-term nomad that has seen far too many turns around the sun to mention right now. Let’s just say that I’ve been on the move (in a slow kind of way) the last 40+ years.
I’m here to help you find good times and great adventures around the globe too – without breaking the bank. If you love nature and the outdoors – hiking, swimming, sailing, wildlife and the like, then you’re in the right place – it’s always going to be my focus!

Also, for those of you that love remote places and the path less traveled. These are the things I love to share so that you can find out about them and head there too.

I won’t generally write about cafes, shops or cities – there’s plenty of that elsewhere. If I do write about them, you know I must have definitely been impressed in some way.

Don’t worry if you are on a tight budget – I am too and I will share ways to make your $ go further and to make money on the road.

And don’t worry if you have never traveled or find the thought of going solo a bit frightening, send me a message or leave a comment or question. I’ll answer as soon as I can. I have helped other people to travel, move overseas, find ways to get the money to travel, or get over the restrictions they feel they have – that’s simply what I love to do.

I really want you to find posts here that help you make your ideas and thoughts a reality. Please DO comment on a post if there is something you want to see me write about for you.

If you are interested – then here’s a little more about me:

  1. I love being in the water sea, river, and lake – I love to swim.
  2. I get chronically motion-sick and seasick, but I’ve sailed around the world and loved it so much that I have done more, and will still do more.
  3. I love hiking and if I’m not sailing, swimming, or chasing down wildlife, that’s where I will probably be.
  4. I grew up on a sheep and cattle farm in New Zealand. But since I finished schooling I’ve been wandering. I love Australia and New Zealand equally it’s like having two kids; they’re so different but you love them both.
  5. I hate the sight of runny eggs. I have no interest in cooking but do have when it comes to eating, and I love almost any fruit.
  6. I am a born nomad it hasn’t been a short-term few years thing. I still don’t have a home base and my age starts with 6 eek! Sometimes I wish I could find a place I wanted as a home base.
  7. I have a girl family no boys! My girls are the best thing that ever happened to me how could they not be?
  8. I’ve worked conventional jobs primarily as a Project Manager, but also a technical writer, English as a second language teacher, hamburger cook, gas attendant, fruit picker, farmhand, waitress (of course), and sometimes travel writer amongst other things I have probably forgotten.
  9. The easiest way I ever made money was by selling my blood. You used to be able to sell it in countries like Taiwan and Macau. It was great! Sadly along came aids and campaigns for locals to give blood so that put a stop to it!
  10. There is a manta ray that is named after me that lives in the Marquesas in French Polynesia! (I guess I will have to write about that sometime!

The girls in Italy – quite a few years ago!

I used to get a lot of questions about my lifestyle and my kids. People often say things like:

“You must love traveling. I wish I could travel as much as you.”

“How do you do it?”

“How did you travel so much alone with three kids?”

And so on….

First of all, yes, I have three daughters and yes, I was a single-mum just about their entire lives.

Yes, they have grown up around the world. They did their schooling in 11 countries and un-schooling in more.

How? I ‘traveled’ slow – a few months here or up to three years there, with some day-to-day travel throughout. I had to work – no internet or remote work back then sadly and I’d never heard of trust fund kids – and definitely wasn’t one (shame).

Now only one has semi-itchy feet. One currently lives in an apartment in New York City, one in her bus in the UK, and the other bases herself at a surf beach in NZ, and goes between there, travel, the Continent and Canada. I have another ‘adult adoptee’ who lives in Montreal. So yes actually, I am lucky with all my girls!!

If you got this far – wow!!!

If you want to know anything else please let me know.

Happy travelling
